Your grade
Using words:
> poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent
5A5:  Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to image, media, format and context through the delivery of solutions to identified visual problems.
(Knowledge & Understanding -  Critical Awareness)
Through the process of using roughs and storyboards, I have acknowledged the problems that the brief has created and I have aimed to understand and solve them. Roughing and developing ideas helps the direction in which my project is going whilst considering important elements such as media, concept, content and composition.
Good

5A6: Understand the potential and limitations of a range of processes, technologies and techniques involved in the development and production of work for print and screen based delivery.
(Knowledge & Understanding -  Research)
Through the process of experimentation of various printing methods and documenting this on my blog, I soon became aware of the certain limitations that are faced with each of the printing processes and the different aesthetics that come with print. These experiments have helped me to decided what process is the best for my practice and how I can utilize what I have learnt through experimentation and transfer that into my final images. This has been evidenced on my blog where I have faced new technologies and techniques in order to increase the development of my work surrounding print based delivery.
Good
5B4: Analyse and critically evaluate primary/secondary source material to inform the development and contextualisation of ideas, concepts and products through individual responses to set briefs.
(Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
Through researching editorial artists, screen-printing artists and animated stings, my work has been more well informed with the techniques and concepts that are gained through continual research. Through researching my author, I was then able to start creating ideas that has a substantial amount of content that is fueled by constantly referring back to the original source of information whilst developing the project in other areas. This is shown on my blog where I have been inspired from the authors ideas but have taken my own tangents that have loose relations to the original source.
Good

5C4: Select, manipulate and apply appropriate media, processes and technologies in the development, production and presentation of ideas, concepts and products.
(Practical Skills -  Practical and Conceptual Development)
Learning and becoming more aware with the different processes of printing methods has been a new turning point for my practice and how I will think about approaching new briefs. It has also made me think about my own personal practice and how I want my images to look and what direction my practice will be taking. I want to carry on developing my newly gained methods of printing across all areas of my image making, I wish to include the textures and colors that are achievable through print and combine that with my hand crafting quality to create something completely new and original. These thoughts and decisions are evidenced on my blog
very good
5C5: Identify, evaluate and apply practical/technical processes, materials and media in order to produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes.
(Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
The overall visual quality and craftsmanship is what I consider to be the most important part of my practice. I think this is clear within my blog that I have demonstrated and developed a high level of visual quality within my screen-printed designs. I feel that the technical processes that have been developed in this module will also inform future briefs in terms of the material process and media used in order to achieve my desired aesthetic within my practice.
Excellent
5D4: Demonstrate the ability to communicate the development and resolution of ideas through appropriate visual and written presentation of work.
(Key Transferable Skills - Presentation and Evaluation)
I have demonstrated a good level of visual presentation of my printed images. I have also demonstrated the ability to show development through experimentation which has informed a well resolved set of outcomes. I have also developed a level of visual and written appropriate response that is evidenced on my blog. The resolution of ideas has been clearly shown on my journey through this module and evidence is provided on my blog posts.
Very good

I personally think that this project has been the most beneficial to my development as an image maker. At the start of this module I had little no experience in analogue print processes, but now I feel that I have gained a wide range of useful skills methods and processes such as screen-printing that has changed the way I think about not only how I will approach future projects, but also how I will think about making more professional finalized images that will overlap into my own personal practice. The new print processes I have learnt within this project has been the most enjoyable way for me to create my images, the brief really pushed me away from thinking about how I would usually tackle a project, This module has allowed me to be pushed out of my comfort zone and through the process of experimentation discover new and original methods of image making. Colour, shape, line and texture are all areas in which I think I have progressed with in this module. Screen-printing has been the most successful print process that I have learnt, this has been the most beneficial and enjoyable part of the project discovering how I can use colour, shape and line in screen-printing to get a completely unique and effective aesthetic to my own images and designs. Being in the print room has really helped me to understand the new processes and methods such as t-shirt printing that has really had a large impact on what direction I want my personal practice to take. I was really happy with my final printed images in studio brief 2, the experiment processes enabled me to combine my natural hand drawing style with a printed aesthetic that has converted a simple drawing into something that could potentially be sold, I feel like my work has gained a sense of professionalism in this module which will be further developed and refined. This module has also allowed me to develop my computer software abilities, using Photoshop for editing and enhancing images has really helped to the overall aesthetic of my editorial final designs and this knowledge will be helping me to produce finalized higher quality images.

Throughout this project I have really got to understand how to use roughs, sketches and storyboards to my best possible advantage. I have discovered that by the process of roughing out ideas, much can be made from the smallest of sketches so there is no need to spend wasted time in the sketchbook refining thumbnails when the idea is all that is needed to be taken forward. The process of roughs gives me a brief idea of composition, line, shape and context of the image. For me I have learned that that is enough to make a strong finalized design. Many of my decisions that have been made throughout this project has been influenced by tutors and peers. When making some big decisions that would change the direction of my project, I would first consult my peers seeking advice and opinions from others. I have found that getting feedback from a wide range of people can help to make the decision needed in order to put my project onto the path that will lead me to creating the best possible outcomes.

Looking back now I realize how I could have tackled this module in a way that would have given me the best possible overall outcome. I feel like for studio brief three I could have put a lot more effort into the whole process of creating the sting, I could have further explored the possibilities that could be achieved through moving pictures. My knowledge on the software's are limited but I could have watched videos, asked others and just spend more time experimenting and refining my animation. Another way in which I could have managed this module more effectively is my use of blogging. I will spend much time thinking about different aspects of my work, what I've discovered, what went well and what didn't, but I haven't translated these thoughts reflectively or consistently throughout my blogs. I need to get myself in the routine of keeping my blog updated as my project progresses, this will really help me to reflect on my own practice while the thoughts are still fresh. I have found that blogging work in retrospect makes it much more difficult to communicate what my original thoughts were at the time. So in future projects I will make sure to keep my blog posts consistent in order to have the best critical and reflective evaluation of my project as it takes new directions. Another way in which my project could of had more depth is that is my design work were more well informed with research about my author and if my final images had stronger conceptual elements

Overall I am really happy with what I have achieved during this project, this has been my favorite brief at Leeds College of Art. The methods and processes I have learnt will be taken forward into future briefs and also into my own personal practice. The process of screen-printing has helped to elevate the quality of my work and has given me more confidence as an image maker as to what direction I would like to start pursuing in order to get the best out of my illustration.

Studio brief 3 - Animation Final

The Cosmos with Carl Sagan from kieran jeffery on Vimeo.

I am pretty happy with how my final animation final has turned out. I think I was successful in how I had imagined my sting through the process of storyboarding and was able to fully translate my sketches into a series of moving images. This really solidifies the importance of roughing and storyboards. Once the idea done in simple form  it can then be enough to create something that is a completed image or moving image.
Using aftereffects was a very fiddly process for me because I am usually a very analogue style designer, its always quite difficult for me to pick up different software's. But after a while of concentrating and getting tips from others in the class I was able to pick up the necessary skills to complete my animation. Although my sting was created on a computer software I still think I was able to keep a hand generated aesthetic which is what I was aiming to achieve. This is because my zine, editorials and final printed pictures also have a hand crafted quality.
I also think that the animation could have been improved in many ways aswel if I had spent more time getting to know the software. I could have done much more with the typography and the planets could have had more intricate movements if I had created more layers, I like the music in this but I could also of added some further sound effects for more emphasis to the sting.
I have tried communicating Carl Sagan with the sting by relating to my animation through the use of the cosmos and planets.
I am now happy that I can use the basics of after effects, this will definitely come useful in the future, I do find it difficult to figure out different software's and I don't really like making artwork by being sat at a computer screen but I am hoping to learn more of after effects and somehow use it to my advantage with future projects and within my own practice.

Studio brief 3 - Sound

For the sound/music for my animation, I have decided to use a small sample from one of my favourite animations the big lez show. I have searched many different sound samples from freesound.org but nothing really caught my full attention. I was sat watching this animated show when a specific scene came on where one of the characters is having a spiritual experience and the music that is played in the background during this scene is what I have chosen to use in my 30 second sting. I was searching for a piece of music that would really relate to my animation, so it has to be something that sounds spacey and has a very mellow tone. The sounds used in an animation can really add emphasis on certain scenes so I wanted to make sure that the sounds used really create the spacey atmosphere throughout the sting.

This is the scene in which the music is playing that I am going to use in my animation. This is one of my favourite animated scenes of all time. the main character lez is going through a life changing experience and the music to this part really makes the scene to powerful. The trippy/spacey sounds make it a perfect collection of sounds that I will use for my animated sting.

The piece of music it self is called 'its time to wake up' by Jarred Write who also voices and animates the big lez show.

This is the original piece of music converted into an MP3 from youtube. The music itself is really slow and the into takes a while for the sound to fully develop so I had to do some editing on the song to make it fit my animation. All I had to do was delete certain parts of the music so that the timing is accurate so the animated images and sounds work as one whole unit.
This is the 30 second version of 'its time to wake up' chopped and edited to work with my sting.

Studio brief 3 - Screenshot development

I have taken screenshots of the development and progression of my 30 second animation. Taking screenshots breaks the animation down into frames so its easy to see how it has been composed. I think how I had imagined it with my roughing and storyboards, it seems to be pretty accurate. This is because my idea is not to over complicated and the movements that take place are relatively simple.

Studio brief 3 - Scanned images

Using my existing images of my printed astronauts will be an easier way for me to compose the 30 second sting. The astronaut I have selected will just be transformed into a simple motion across the frame. Using tools I have picked up in the workshop and through trial and error I should be able to move this astronaut across the frame how I have imagined it through storyboards.

I chose this astronaut for my final sting because this one has the most convincing form of floating in space which is exactly the impression I am trying to communicate for the first half of my animation.
I want it to seem like the astronaut is out of space and time until he zooms into the frame opening up into a new universe.

This is the background texture of the cosmos I am going to use in my animation. I have created this using purple pink and blue paint onto a black surface and the splatted white dots over the top using a toothbrush to get the star effect. this will be slowly moving during my animation to give a sense of movement and life with the stars and space. The background has also been slightly edited on Photoshop to enhance the colour and vibrance of the textures.

These are the drawn versions of the planets that will be included into my animation. I have hand drawn these planets because I am going for a hand created quality throughout my animation, my printed astronaut comes from a hand drawn image, the space background is hand painted so these planets needed to be hand drawn to keep a consistent aesthetic running throughout my sting.

These have also been slightly adjusted on Photoshop to darken the pencil lines and to take away the unwanted white areas. I have found that using simple tools and trick and Photoshop can really enhance the overall quality of an image.

Studio brief 3 - Final storyboard

This is the movement that will take place during my 30 second sting. The idea is that there is a small astronaut floating in the void that slowly gets bigger until it is that close to the screen, the visor becomes the full frame that will then fade into a cosmic background with planets and starts moving slowly across the frame until the words 'Explore the universe with Carl Sagan' or 'Explore the cosmos with Carl Sagan' I think because Sagans hit t.v show was called Cosmos I think it is more necessary to us the word cosmos instead of universe.
This storyboard has put an image in my head of how I am going to animate my images. After the aftereffects workshops I now have a basic understanding of how to transform and animate simple forms so hopefully my idea will be simple enough but also effective in the way it translates the ideas of carl sagan.

Studio brief 3 - Storyboards

Just like roughing for a final illustration, an animations first step is the storyboards. As I am completely new to animating an image my storyboards will to help me imagine the animation broken down into frames. This will help me to visualise the things that could possibly take place within the scene and help me to figure out how to approach the movement in a simple way.
From the introduction to animation I have learnt that I need to take a few vital things into consideration when storyboarding for my animated sting.
  • Movement
  • pace
  • tone
  • angle
  • composition

These are aspects of the animation that need to be considered while storyboarding to get a good sense of how my sting will be composed.

This idea of a 30 second sting is an astronaut floating in empty space until the entire scene fades into space. Ive had this idea to try and communicate carl sagans research into the infinite cosmos.
This idea of a short 10 second sting has been taken from my editorial brief, I am thinking about how I could make one of my designs move. In this one the moon shaped balloon will carry a person from the bottom to the top of the frame going completely out of sight. This way of imagining an animation frame by frame is helping me to understand how the objects in my animation will relate to the scene.

This idea is an astronaut hand hand reaching out and touching the finger of an alien hand. Something like this is a really simple idea that has little movement and pace but can still be just as effective at communicating and idea. Because of my limitations I have on this brief I am going to keep my sting as simple as possible using shapes I already have to try and effectively communicate concepts of space and the universe.
This idea for a sting would be the simple shaped astronaut print I have carved from lino coming in and out of the frame with the space and planets slowly moving in the background. Using the shapes I have already designed will help me to compose my animation.

I want to continue with the aesthetics of my screenprints into the animation somehow. The astronauts I have created could potentially work well within a short sting. The glitch could be further explored and brought to life. I could have my astronaut floating in and out of the frame and exaggerating on the glitch.

Studio brief 3 - Animation study task 4

The small sound effects can really help the overall vibe of an animation. In fact the music or sound effects can be the difference between a good animation and a bad one. I think I will have to be really selective with what sounds or music I use in my animation because I will want the sounds and music to echo the content of my animation.

  • Its interesting to see how the movement, music and sound effects in this animation are synchronized to create the illusion that the animated characters are creating the music.
  • The pace of this animation is also really fast and slightly chaotic which means the music has to also keep up with this pace to create a convincing sting.

Animations do not always need to be over complicated. Sometimes the most simple animations can be the most effective. By using simple shapes and textures a lot can be achieved. I have found that sometimes animations rely on well crafted images and little software manipulation whilst others rely on simple images and a lot of software manipulation. I think because I don't know how to use aftereffects I will be relying more on my crafted images to make a simple animation.

I have discovered from studying animation that there are a lot of elements that can have a big impact on the viewer to make a theme, concept or idea more bold and relatable. the fact that it is a moving image automatically gives the possibility for a theme or concept to be fully explored. Also I have found that the use of music and sound effects can really help to stimulate and reflect on what is happening in the moving image. Animations with good sound and music activate two different senses (sight and hearing) and in doing this, an animation can take the viewer of a short journey.

Studio Brief 2 - Product packaging

This is the last stage of my printing process. Packaging the prints by wrapping them in clear plastic with a piece of card for support gives them the professional look that could potentially make them sellable. The prints become more commercially viable. This is a method I have learnt by looking at some of the third years printed images. Seeing them in the plastic wraps just gives them a cleaner and fresh aesthetic whilst protecting them at the same time. I have packaged up my set of five glitches and my set of colour smudges. I have also packaged a few of my lino prints aswel along with the shape based astronaut design. This simple trick really elevates the quality of the print and it is something I am going to be doing much more of when I have more designs to screenprint in the future projects and in my own practice.
